Quitting My Job

I'm not planning to quit my job until late July or maybe even early August. I actually really like what I do. I work for a great company, I like my co-workers, and I'm in a position that I think I'm good at, while still having the opportunity to feel challenged. Plus, the next two years are going to be freakishly expensive, and I'd prefer to save as much money as I can now, so that I can go on lots of cool trips later.

However, I've recently chatted with several other soon-to-be MBA students, and EVERYONE is quitting way earlier than me. And now, I suddenly feel like I'm already missing out. Things like Yacht Week in Croatia sound amazing! And I'd love to spend the summer relaxing before school starts, traveling around the world, and meeting my new future classmates in exciting locales.

FOMO has officially set in.

  1. I'm in a similar boat () with regards to all the yacht week-like outings. However, I don't think those kinds of trips are in the majority. If anything, its probably just a vocal minority of students that's creating the "everyone is doing it" phenomenon.

  2. I was able to take classes on the weekends at the institute and late nights to accommodate my crazy schedule. It was just perfect. I can't complain about my MBA time.

  3. Hey DG, I thought about doing the same as you but got some interesting perspective from a CBS grad. IMO, take a few more weeks off before school starts. You want to be fully recharged to take on the vicious recruiting cycle that will begin in October. Some food for thought.

    1. Sky, so many people have said the same thing to me! I've only met one current student who worked until about 2 weeks before the start of classes. I really need to figure it out.

  4. I was just thinking about this FOMO starting early myself! I'm not quitting until mid July, and if it weren't for the need to move halfway across the globe & pack my things to ship to my parents' in another country, I'd probably be working until early Aug too! I have the same thinking that I should try to earn a bit while I still can, though people tell me 1-2 months won't make a difference but still...

    1. I keep thinking that earning an extra couple of thousand dollars now will be worthwhile. That means I can later afford an extra trip to Hong Kong or Dubai or anywhere else. But at the same time, in the grand scheme of MBA debt, a few thousand dollars is really not that much... decisions, decisions...
